Tarusan River, Nagari Taratak, West Sumatra

Rafting that once categorized as extreme sport now become popular tourist attraction. Despite the challenge and adventure aspects, the water activities are increasingly in demand. More places offer the attractions. One of them is Tarusan Batang (River) in Nagari Taratak, Lundang River, South Coast District, West Sumatra.

Tarusan river is known for its rapid and challenging track. The river has quite long and rapid mainstream, there ae also bends and bottlenecks in some places.

The path of the river used for rafting has a length of about five kilometers. It takes between 60-90 minutes to complete the route.

Protruding rocks on the surface of rivers create unique currents. Like reversal current or even circular currents that form a hole in the water.

Those challenges is what makes rafting in Batang Tarusan an exciting experience for those who love adventure travel. No wonder Batang Tarusan has always be an option for rafting sport events.

Among the many rapids along the river, the ‘Goodbye‘ rapid is a favorite. The rapid is very strong and wide. It takes special skills to get past it. Boat upside risk is the challenge.

Batang Tarusan located approximately 45 kilometers south of Padang. There are two options as a starting point for rafting. The first is the most upstream region, in Kampuang Taratak. The second is slightly downstream, at Desa Baru. Those two options starting point have the distance of approximately one kilometer.

South Coastal District has Painan as the capital city. It’s located about 70 kilometers from the capital of West Sumatra, Padang. There are several means of transportation that can deliver visitors to Painan. One of them is AKDP bus (Intercity In the Province).

Visitors from outside the province can reach it from Minangkabau International Airport in Padang. From the airport, visitors go to the asar Raya Padang by bus airport called ‘tranek’ or taxi.

From Pasar Raya Padang, the travel continues to the intersection of Lubuak Begalung street to get inercity Bus with Padang-Pesisir Selatan route. But if you don’t want any difficulties, you could rent a car with a cost of IDR 250000-350000(US $25-35) for 24 hours use.

But before you leave, don’t forget to taste the special cuisine of South Coast that can be found in almost every shop or restaurant. The most famous is kapalo curry fish. Alternatively, you can try acid boiled fish(ikan rebus asam).

It’s special because those two main dishes are made from fresh fish caught at sea using fishing rods or nets. With sliced red peppers and sauted onion it is very tempting dishes. The menu is also considered as the most healthy because it doesn’t use fatty ingredients such as cooking oil or coconut milk.

If you go there in a large group, these dishes can be specially ordered in restaurant. The best time to make the order is at around 11:00. Because, at that hour, fishermen just returning from sea with fresh fishes.
