Sentani Lake, The Place of Peace and Serenity

Sentani is the name of a lake located in Papua, Indonesia. Sentani lake lies under the slopes of Cycloops Mountain Nature Reserve which has an area of about 245,000 hectares. This lake lies between the city of Jayapura and District Jayapura, Papua. Sentani lake has an area of approximately 9,360 hectares and is located at an altitude of 75 m above sea level. Sentani lake is the largest lake in Papua.

There are 21 small islands adorn this beautiful lake. The word “sentani” means literally “we live here in peace“. The word was first mentioned by a Christian Pastor BL Bin when carrying out missionary on the area of the lake in 1898.

Sentani has abundant lake biota. People often found various endemic species of plants and animals of Papua. In addition to the wealth of biota and the landscape, the area is also rich in cultural communities. Traditional ceremonies for welcoming guests often made public, while for tourists, this could be a very interesting spectacle.

There are 30 species of freshwater fish and four of which are endemic to the lake such as Sentani’s cork fish (Oxyeleotris heterodon), Sentani’s Rainbow Fish (Chilatherina sentaniensis), Red Rainbow Fish (Glossolepis incisus) and Shark chainsaw (Pristis microdon).



There is also Sentani Lake Festival which is annually held to attract tourists. Sentani Lake Festival is usually held in mid-June, this festival had been declared as an annual festival and included in Indonesia’s main tourism calendar. The festival is filled with traditional dances on the boat, Papua typical war dances, traditional ceremonies such as Ondoafi coronation, and introduction to a variety of Papua culinary.


To reach the city of Jayapura, travelers can take flights from various cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar Bali and Makassar straight to Sentani Airport, Jayapura. From this airport, travelers can take public transport with the route Abepura-Sentani which takes about 20 minutes.
