Salando, The Lamp Island

Salando Island or known as the Lamps Island by the local community, is a very small island located in the Celebes(Sulawesi Sea, Indonesia. Within 1.18 nautical miles or about 2.13 kilometers of this island is directly adjacent with Malaysia and the Philippines. The island is inhabited by three lighthouse keeper lights and 4 members of their families.

Administratively, Salando is part of Kapas Village area, Tolitoli, Central Sulawesi Province with an area of 0.3 km2.

Topography and physiography

Salando island is officially an uninhabited island. Full with rocks and reefs, this island has a hilly topography with a lot of vegetation growing on it. Though uninhabited, the island has a lighthouse tower. Its presence helps to navigate cruise ships and boats that pass in the waters of this island. And that’s the origin of why people call this island the “Lamp” island.

Salando island has the morphology of steep hills with slopes of above 30 degrees. This island is a glimpse of the rock piles with a height of up to 50 meters above sea level.

Salando beaches around the island are the type of rocky shore or rock coast formed from rocks with a high resistance which is granite rocks. This beach is characterized by the shoreline bordered by very steep rocks.

The rocks that form this island is the kind of granite with the color of greenish gray, weathered brown color, hard to very hard, has undergone crystallization filled by calcite and quartz minerals. On the south side of the island, the result of weathering of rocks produces coarse sandy beaches derived from quartz minerals they contain.

‘Salando’ in Tolitoli means clever. No one remembered where did the name come from. It’s just out of nowhere. The surrounding population can only mean the name alone. Salando have an area of only about 0.3 square kilometer. The coastal is mostly rocks and cliffs with a height of 70 meters.

Salando Island has plenty of underwater tourism potential. This can be seen from the many types of coral reefs that grow around its waters.


To reach Salando island, early in the course can be started from the city of Palu, Central Sulawesi. The air router or land route can be taken from the city of Tolitoli. The landroute is about 430 km and takes about 12-13 hours using a travel or car rental. Air route can be used with a travel time for 50 minutes using pioneering aircraft with scheduled flights every Tuesday and Thursday.

Then, to really reach the island Salando, the land route has to be taken from Kapas village whicich is the nearest village to the island. It’s about 60 km from Tolitoli and can be reach for 90 minutes by car. Furthermore, from the Kapas village, the sea route is will take about 30 minutes by fishing boat.

When you get there, you have to visit the lighthouse.
