Manusela National Park, Maluku

Manusela National Park is a perfect representative type of swamp forest ecosystem, coastal, lowland rain forest and mountain rain forest in Maluku. Vegetation types found in this national park is the mangrove, beach , swamp forest, river bank, pamah tropical rain forest, mountain forest, and sub-alpine forest.

Some plant species in this national park are tancang (Bruguiera sexangula), mangrove (Rhizophora acuminata), api-api (Avicennia sp.), Lime (Dryobalanops sp.), Pulai (Alstonia scholaris), ketapan (Terminalia catappa), pandanus (Pandanus sp.), meranti (Shorea selanica), benuang (Octomeles sumatrana), matoa / lotion (Pometia pinnata), eucalyptus (Melaleuca leucadendron), various kinds of orchids, and endemic ferns(Chintea binaya).

There are about 117 bird species found in Manusela National Park, where 14 species of them are endemic, such as musk Ternate (Lorius garrulus), purple nape parrot/ black-headed parrot (L. domicella), Seram parrot (Cacatua moluccensis), king prawn (Halcyon lazuli and H . sancta), Seram honey big bird (Philemon subcorniculatus), and the king parrot / parrot ambon (Alisterus amboinensis).

Seram parrot is one Maluku’s endemic species whose existence threatened with extinction in the wild due to poaching and the destruction of their habitat. Other animals in this national park is the deer (Cervus timorensis moluccensis), Cuscus (Phalanger orientalis orientalis), soa-soa (Hydrosaurus amboinensis), wild boar (Sus celebensis), mongoose (Pardofelis marmorata), panama lizard (Tiliqua gigas gigas), dugongs (Dugong dugon), green turtle (Chelonia mydas), and various species of butterflies.

  • Merkele-Edge, Edge Kabipoto, Wae Kawa: Exploring the forest, rock climbing, animal / plant observation
  • Pasahari: Deers and birds observation
  • Wai Isal: Camping, exploring the forest, animal / plant observation
  • Pilana: Butterflies observation and exploring the forest.
  • Binaya Mountain: Climbing, Hiking, explori the forests and the waterfalls.

There is also cultural attractions outside the Park called Masohi Festival in November, Kora-kora competition in April and the Darwin-Ambon International Yacht race in July in Ambon.

The best visiting season: May to October each year.

How To Reach The Location

Manusela National Park can be reached through the North coast (Sawai and Wahai) or through the South coast (Tehoru and Moso). Route of Moso is perfect for climber because the slope is about 30%. We can use ferry from Ambon to Masohi every day for about eight hours, continued to Saka using the car for about two hours, and to Wahai using a speed boat about two hours. Or, from Ambon to Wahai using a ship for about 24 hours (there are 3 departures per week). And continuing from Masohi to Tehoru using motor boats for about nine hours, proceed to the Moso and Saunulu Village.

And you can witness a National Park you’ve never seen before.
