Kampung Naga, Traditional Village in the Middle of Modernization

The downside of technology and modernization is frenetic and the complexity of life. Those who wants to briefly leave the condition and enjoy natural life without a touch of modernization and technology can choose the Kampung Naga(Dragon Village), Neglasari, District Salawu, Tasikmalaya.

Unique. It could be the right word to describe life in Kampung Naga. Geographically, the village is very close and in direct contact with modern life. However, local people able to maintain the traditions and customs that barely touched the modernization and technology.

The location is only about 30 kilometers from the capital city of Tasikmalaya and approximately 90 kilometers from the provincial capital of West Java, Bandung. The place is very close to the provincial highways. The village lies between the modern settlements. However, contiguity with the modern world doesn’t make any culture changes on Kampung Naga.

There is a wide parking area near Kampung Naga. It’s free of charge to go inside Kampung Naga. Visitors only need to pay for the parking.

A monument with the shape of kujang -a traditional weapon- marks the location of Kampung Naga. The monument stands on a black marble base as high as 7 meters.

The cleaver height reaches 5 feet. Uniquely, the cleaver is made from the fusion 900 traditional weapons from various regions in Indonesia archipelago. The making involved 40 kris-makers from all over the archipelago. The making was lead by Kanjeng Raden Tumenggung Dedy P. Asmo Dipuro, from Solo, Central Java.

The monument was inaugurated on 16 April 2009. On that year too, near the monument was built Museum Kujang. The museum is collecting many kinds of Pasundan community’s traditional weapons . Not less than 200 keris and kujang are stored in the museum.

To enter the Kampung Naga, visitors have to descended thousands of stairs starting from the parking location. Then, visitors walk down the stretch of road made of stone. The road were exactly on the edge of the River Ciwulan.

The distance from the parking lot to Kampung Naga approximately 500 meters. There are several guides in parking lots for visitors who need tour guide services. They can guide in English and Indonesian.

All the way down the stairs, there are a number of shops and resting places for visitors who may get tired. In addition, throughout the journey down the stairs, visitors can see and get to know the spice crops planted by the people of Kampung Naga, like kapol. It’s become evident that the residents of Kampung Naga is not only alive in nature, but nature coexist.
