Honai House, Papua Version Of Iglo

Honai is a typical house of Papua made of wood with conical roof made of reeds or straw. Honai purposely built small or narrow and windowless in order to withstand the cold weather of Papua mountains. Honai usually built as high as 2.5 meters and there’s a place to make fire at the center of the house to warm the family inside.



There are three types of Honai house, honai for men which named honai itself, for
Honai house divided into three types, namely for men (called Honai), women (called Ebei), and pig cage (called Wamai).



Honai house usually inhabited by 5 to 10 people. Honai house in one building used for resting (sleep), the other buildings for place to eat together, and the third building for livestock corral. Honai house are generally divided into two levels. The ground floor and first floor are connected by a bamboo ladder. The men sleep on the ground floor in a circle, while the women sleep on the first floor.
