Krakatau Islands

Most of us probably only ever heard of Krakatoa, the mountain with devastating eruption in 1883, killing no less than 36,000 people, causing a tsunami as high as 30 meters in beach area of Banten(Java) and Gulf Betung, Lampung(Sumatera).

The dusts from the eruption filled the globe atmosphere to europe and north pole, blocked the sunlight to the earth, and lowering the temperature of the earth by around one degree Celsius.

But behind the fierce reputation, Krakatoa is a beautiful and unique natural attractions. Years after the eruption, there were just three scorched peaks of land left, namely the peak of Rakata, Panjang, and Sertung.

All the previous flora and fauna were dead, burned by magma from within the earth. But those three islands are now charred green again, it’s suspected that the plants are originated from seeds that washed away by waves to the shore of the islands. In all three islands there are also fauna like biawak(big lizzard), and even rats. The big lizards are believed to derive from the nearest island to swim here. While the rats are suspected to come from the boats that sank in the area of the Sunda strait. They might swim or join the goods from the sinking ship and drifted away by the waves to the islands.

Right in the middle of these three islands stands the Little Krakatoa mountain. This newly mountain emerged to the surface of the sea in 1927 and had sunk several times before then appeared again and became larger. It’s now as high 315 meters above sea level. Krakatau Islands also offers natural and beautiful scenery and also one of the favorite places for divers.

Ujung Kulon

Another adventure tourism object which is not less exotic is the Ujung Kulon, at the western end of Java island. The beaches on Ujung Kulon are known to their natural beauty with panoramic views, the white sand and clear sea water. There are two large islands usually visited by tourists here, the Peucang island and Handeuleum. There are animals that live in their natural habitat, such as bull, deer, and monkeys. If we’re lucky enough, we could see the rare one-horned rhinoceros.

On the Peucang island there is an inn located not far from the forest. We might encounter wild animals of Ujung Kulon along the way. On the beaches, besides snorkeling, we could do some trekking to the Karang Copong beach through the forest. This beach is a favorite location to enjoy the awesome sunset.

From the Karang Copong, we can continue the journey toward the “hidden paradise” in Layar Cape and Sea Garden. Here we can do more snorkeling before Handeuleum Island, where bison occupies its original habitat.
