Each Color Has Its Own Meaning
The trip to the island of Flores or Ende in particular, won’t feel complete if you haven’t visited the Lake Kelimutu or the Lake of Three Colors. Lake Kelimutu is a lake with a lot of stories and mysteries.
The lake is known by its three colors: red, blue, and white. Even so, the colors are always changing over time. Just now, two colors of the three lakes are brown, while the other is green.
Kelimutu is a combination of words ‘Keli’ which means mountain and ‘Mutu’ which means boiling. According to the locals legend , the colors on the lake Kelimutu has its own meaning and contains a very powerful force of nature.
Lake or Tiwu Kelimutu divided into three sections corresponding to the color of the lake. Blue lake or Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai is a gathering place for the souls of people who died young. Red lake or Tiwu Ata Polo is a gathering place for the souls of those who was always committing crime / sorcery during their life. While white lake or Tiwu Ata Mbupu is a gathering place for the souls of the elderly.
Early morning is the best time to witness the beauty of the lake Kelimutu. Meanwhile, by mid-morning, moreover late afternoon, usually the lake view would be obstructed by thick fog.
In addition to the lake view, there can also be witnessed another natural beauty of Kelimutu National Park like the forest overgrown with pines and the twittering birds that inhabit the area.
Flores lake natural wealth is also supported by the cultural richness like traditional houses, traditional dances and weaving crafts that are unique characteristic of local residents. Also, there are hot springs, waterfalls, and traditional villages which you MUST visit.
And if you want to visit, the best time is between July and September. That’s when the weather is not too hot, and the rain is yet to fall.
